«And when the sun was going down, all those who had friends afflicted with diseases of any kind brought them to Him: and He laid His hands upon each one of them, and healed them.» – Luke 4:40
Eremitorium, obeying the admonitions of Jesus (for example, «you will always have the poor among you» as in John 12:8), takes an active role in attending to those in need, seeking to establish the bonds of charity directly with those suffering in any way, above all because Jesus Himself wished to identify Himself with «the least» and, thus, is in them in a very special way (cf. Matthew 25:40): they are indeed the Suffering Christ!
Eremitorium accomplishes this with a twofold exercise of charity: first, through spiritual works of mercy and, secondly, through a denotative diakonia —that is, literally, a practical «service in love» (cf. Acts 6:3), or, in other words, the loving exercise of the corporal works of mercy (cf. Matthew 25:35-36).
In a practical way, Eremitorium carries out this most lofty exercise of diakonia in the present, like the Church has always done it —since the first community of believers (cf. Acts 2:44-45; 4:34-35) or the subsequent early Christians (cf. St. Justin Martyr, First Apology, 67)— with distribution of alms and goods and with specific programs of personal assistance to the least.
